The Transmission: Workshops w/ the Performers October 1st

Vera Passos-Bahia, Brazil
Element of Silvestre Technique, Symbols of the Orixas
10 am-12 pm

Vera Passos is considered one of the most elegant of AfroBrazilian Dancers. It's like honey when you watch her dance," says critics. Her technique encompasses modern dance, classical ballet, Danca Afro, Jazz and Traditional AfroBrazilian.

Vera started her training with modern dance in Salvador, Bahia, and became involved with other forms of dance such as classical ballet and traditional dance. Through these she came into contact with the dance company Bale Folclórico da Bahia and became a company member. She gathered a lot of dance training experience and has since begun to teach/train other dancers that can be seen in professional dance companies such as Ballet Theater of Castro Alves and Grupo Corpo.

Vera became interested in the Silvestre Technique because it went in the direction of the training that she was looking for and today she is a Silvestre Technique teacher as a part of the ST Dance Program in Salvador. Vera has been very involved since early on in the research and development of the Silvestre Technique.

MIRIAM PERETZ-Internationally acclaimed performing artist & coreographer
12-2 pm

Sacred Dances of the Silk Road- Mystical Persian Dance
Dances inspired by ancient Persia, the Silk Road and Sufi whirling tradition.  A journey in creating devotional dances through music, poetry and heart.
This workshop will introduce students to Persian Classical dance, with a focus on interpretive, devotional movement.  Inspired by the great Sufi poets Rumi, Omar Khayam, and Hafiz, many common themes in Persian dance include- the moth to flame, nightingales and roses, intoxication with love for the beloved, or a bird spreading its wings to fly to freedom.  Incorporating elements of focused breath-work, whirling practices and improvisation, we will draw inspiration from beautiful Sufi poetry to create personally meaningful and interpretative dances.
*please bring socks or dance shoes and if you are inspired, a poem.

Instructor Miriam Peretz is an internationally acclaimed performing artist and instructor specializing in dances from the Silk Road and the Middle East.  Miriam has been a featured soloist with numerous dance companies, as well as performed with many acclaimed musicians, both in the U.S. and abroad.  She is currently assistant artistic director, principle dancer and choreographer of Ballet Afsaneh Central Asian dance company based in the San Francisco Bay Area.   Miriam has traveled extensively and studied with master teachers in Central Asia & the Middle East. On these journeys she received great inspiration, finding ways that the arts can help bridge gaps, create respect, love and unity among people of different spiritual traditions, and backgrounds. Miriam’s dance style uniquely fuses together traditional, contemporary, and sacred dance forms.

Grass Valley 3rd Annual Temle Dance Festival

What is the festival?
It is our understanding that many artists seek a sacred space in which they feel safe to fully express their art.  It is with this concept in mind that the Temple Dance Festival was birthed in 2009. It is our Vision to create a safe , supportive, and non competitive community event whereby participants can come together to share in the exchange of sacred arts from around the globe. In addition, we hold the intention of preserving and reviving the ancient rituals of music and dance from around the world and gaining inspiration from these arts to evolve new forms of ritual art.
